History of Tamil Nadu Foundation
Posted by Shan I 7 May, 2010 archives 2

Commitment to serve the needy is a noble objective. Nothing can be greater than the desire to share one’s fortunes with the less fortunate to bring about a change in the quality of their lives. It was with these lofty aims that the Tamil Nadu Foundation, Inc. came into being as a charitable organization devoted to the promotion of social, economic and educational objectives in Tamil Nadu, India. With the hope that it can bring together through this organization all those concerned about the welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu, the TNF, Inc was founded on Thanksgiving Day, November 29th, 1974, at Baltimore, Maryland, USA by Dr. R.Palanisamy, Dr. P.G.Perumalswami and Dr. B.Thiyagarajan. Dr. P.G.Periasamy, the first President of the TNF, played a key role in the growth of the organization in its formative years.

tnf-history

The objective of the TNF is to promote educational, social and other charitable projects in Tamil Nadu. Thus its aim and objectives are distinctly different from those of the local cultural organizations based in the USA. In fact, the TNF is the only organization in the world that is entirely devoted to the promotion of economic, educational and social welfare of the people of Tamil Nadu. What began as a small attempt by a few individuals to offer contributions to Tamil Nadu has evolved into a well-developed foundation through the dedication of several members living all over the USA. Incorporated in the State of Maryland on December 4th, 1975, the Tamil Nadu Foundation was given a tax-exempt status on June 24th, 1976. Since then the TNF has been rendering yeoman service to the people of Tamil Nadu through more than 300 projects.
