GRIHA, an acronym for ‘Green Rating for Integrated Habitat Assessment’, is the National Rating System of India. It has been conceived by TERI and developed jointly with the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, Government of India. It is a green building ‘design evaluation system’, and is suitable for all kinds of buildings in different climatic zones of the country.
Basics & Benefits Of GRIHA Rating System
Up to 30% reduction in energy consumption
Limited waste generation due to recycling
Less consumption of water
Reduced pollution load & liability
Sustainable Habitats
Voluntary building rating systems play an important role in popularizing the concept of green design. As per international trends, the leading rating systems abroad have been devised to suit the building industry of the country where they were developed.
In the Indian context, these foreign rating systems would be useful only for AC buildings. Since a large number of buildings in India are non-AC and that too existing in varied climatic conditions, it is imperative to have a nationally relevant rating system. The bottom line: GRIHA is that much-needed Indian-centric green building rating system.

Today’s Times of India carries an interesting article about integrated townships. Integrated townships come with the promise of a better lifestyle. SHRIPAL MUNSHI (who is an architect/ urban designer from Columbia University, lived and worked in the US and Far East for more than a decade and is now based in Chennai) talks about the experience these spaces offer, comparing townships in India and abroad
The last decade in India has seen the advent and exponential growth of a real estate phenomenon called Integrated Townships . Essentially these “cities within a city” or “subcities” are self-sufficient, contained developments ranging in size from tens of acres to several hundred acres in India. In other parts of the world, the scale often changes and these developments jump in size to a couple of hundred square kilometres. One gated development outside Mexico City stretches over 54 square miles. The largest “gated community” as they are known in the US covers 26,000 wooded acres. In the Middle East and China, plans and construction are afoot for creating energyfriendly and carbon-neutral developments which hope to become role models for future habitations. Masdar, outside Abu Dhabi will cover seven square kilometres and will be a carbon neutral, zero energy, eco-friendly development of 50,000 residents.
By very definition, these developments bring together the essential components of our everyday life which are places to live, work and play without travelling for miles and hours. They offer a safe, practical, healthy and very often affordable low-density solution for modern living and provide an interesting counterpoint to the congestion, chaos, vibrancy and high octane existence of city life. The key to successful integrated township planning is to balance basic infrastructure with social infrastructure, in other words- the hardware with the software (education, medicare, retail, workplaces, community spaces, recreation and cultural spaces). Without this connectivity and interdependence, these townships are non-starters.
